Presentation Title: “The Mighty Micro:bit”
The micro:bit is an incredibly versatile educational technology tool and can be used to engage students in numerous programming tasks. In this session, participants will engage in different tasks micro:bit for STEAM learning and explore various methods of integrating the micro:bit into instruction.
In this presentation representatives from STEAM TAC will detail some of the effective ways in which we have integrated the micro:bit into our immersive lesson experiences. These examples will serve as an introduction for the audience so that they can engage in hands-on activities. We firmly believe that it is much more impactful to experience these tasks rather than just hear about them. This experience includes programming tasks such as measuring and displaying ambient temperature, sending and receiving radio signals, and controlling motors and other sensors through expansion boards. This hands-on experience will serve as the transition to the second portion of our presentation wherein participants will explore more of the micro:bit's capabilities and brainstorm some ways they can integrate it into their instruction. The audience most impacted by this presentation will be educators and academic support professionals (e.g., Technology Integration Specialists). However, other individuals in school/district educational technology leadership positions (e.g., principals, tech directors) will also benefit as the micro:bit is an effective learning tool that can be acquired at a very reasonable cost. It is our goal that participants walk away from the session with both simple and complex methods of integrating the micro:bit into impactful STEAM learning activities for students.
